Gastric Band Back to files
The gastric band is an example of a restrictive stomach operation. This ensures as it were, that a restriction is placed on the amount of food you take per eetmoment to you. This treatment is most effective for obese people who owe their overweight from eating excessive amounts of normal food (savory volume eaters). When excessive eating of sweets and fatty foods is a gastric band less suitable.
What is a gastric band and how does it work?
MaagbandDe gastric band is a plastic ring which is slid to the beginning of the stomach. In this way, the stomach, as it were divided into two portions. A small portion above the ring, and a larger area under the plastic ring. If you eat something then, this is the first into the small area. The ring will then ensure that it is slow and is not easily carried out at the greater section. You will then feel full faster so you can enjoy a eetmoment only small amounts. The passage of the ring can be made smaller by a small plastic box that is placed at the gastric surgery under the skin. This cabinet is in communication with the ring. In such a cabinet can, via a needle through the skin, causing water to be sprayed, the passage of the ring is reduced. The band is then tightened around the stomach so you are still faster. A gastric band surgery takes about one hour.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a gastric band?
In general, the gastric band is less effective than the other gastric surgery for obesity. This is because many fattening 'soft' (eg liquid) are. The softer the food, the easier it still goes through the ring. Think of whipped cream, soft drinks, soft sweets, mayonnaise, ice cream, sauces, chocolate or mashed potatoes. Another disadvantage of a gastric band is that it may cause vomiting and pain on swallowing.
The gastric band also has specific advantages. Thus, the operation in itself, less complicated so that fewer complications than in other stomach operations. In addition, the risk of death from gastric banding is the lowest of all stomach operations. Another important advantage is that a gastric band operation is reversible. The band may therefore also be removed again. In most cases, will be returning again soon overweight. See complications of stomach surgery for a summary picture of the complications that may occur.
