I'm tending to get chronic heartburn symptoms throughout the day. You always hear of the foods you should stay away from, are there any foods that neutralize heartburn? Possibly foods that contain the same active ingredient in tums?

yes
milk is a natural antacid and it really works! Also ice cream and yogurt work really well. Milk worked really well for me when I had horrible acid reflux at the end of my pregnancy.
When calcium supplements are taken with food they act as antacids as well.
Here is a website which discusses the danger associated with taking antacids:

Carrots and fresh ginger
I believe people will add a carrot in anything cooked with tomatoes or lemon to neutralize the acidity.
In India, people use fresh ginger or ginger extract as a remedy.
I am sure there are herbs and seasings that also help minimize acid reflex and heartburn. In Ayurveda, there are number of antural plants and herbs that are used for this. Not a 100% sure, but cumin seeds are used to reduce gas when eating beans, lentils and legumes.
Will have to call my aunt or mom and get a list of things. I will post more in the discussion as I find out other items. Thanks for a wonderful question.

Here's a couple of thoughts
My husband gets instant relief from chronic heartburn by having a small York Peppermint Patty. He buys them by the bag and each one is about the size of a quarter...chocolate covered mint.
For me, a good swig of Diet Coke seems just enough to bring up the burp that’s causing my heartburn.
Aloe vera juice is highly recommended for any kind of stomach problem...naturally soothing for everything from ulcers to heartburn...acid reflux...it seems to neurtalize the stomach acids and coat the lining.
This is just one of many companies that sell aloe juice for heartburn relief...not a bad price, either <:O)

Heart burn and acid reflex are due to low stomach acid. I take HCl and enzymes when I eat. I also take...
lemon juice when I eat. Some people take apple cider vinegar 2 tsp with a meal. I am celiac and it destroys the cells that make HCl to digest food. Tums is the opposite of what is good and have Al in it. You want to increase the acid.

I have this problem, too,
and I have found that drinking a glass of milk can help, especially if you catch your heartburn before it gets too bad. Hope this helps!

In my opinion bread works the best since it absorbs liquids while passing through esophagus. Tums work only temporary and your stomach will produce even more acid to compensate for them - milk will do trick simlar to Tums. I would just drink some water to dilute acid.
Below are two lists related to food and heartburn.
